Vastu as Science
Vastu is the scientific study of directions, which aims at utilizing the natural energies that are available free of cost, for the benefit of humans, by creating an equilibrium between man and material. Vastu considered the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but every living being on earth. Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behaviour and other basics of life. As a science, it extracts the positive energy from the natural elements of the universe – the panchbhootas, namely, earth, water, air, sun and sky. It all these five elements, for creating a congenial setting or a place to live or work in, in most the scientific way, exploiting the benefits bestowed by the five basic elements.
The equilibrium in nature can be easily seen among all the moving bodies by the human beings, but unfortunately they are unable to see such equilibrium in a static body. Vastu shastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology; it can also be said as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will secure from things going wrong.

Vastu shastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. These basic elements are Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND). Vastu is an old practice that was evolved by learned men of the past, for the welfare of mankind. It is a vast field of study that lays down certain principles, paving way for good health, wealth and prosperity to enter our house. In Indian architecture, the dwelling is itself a shrine. A home is called manushyalaya, literally, “human temple”. It is not merely a shelter for human beings in which to rest and eat. The concept behind house design is the same as for temple design, so sacred and spiritual are the two spaces. The “open courtyard” system of house design was the national pattern in India before Western models were introduced. The order introduced into the “built space” accounts for the creation of spiritual ambiance required for the in dweller to enjoy spiritual well-being and material welfare and prosperity. The principles of Vastu, which were laid down in the ancient times, are purely based on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. They continue to be used by people till date, while undertaking any form of construction, to keep everything in equilibrium.
Vastu shastra is based on various natural energies, which are available in atmosphere, namely:
- Solar Energy
- Lunar Energy
- Earth Energy
- Sky Energy
- Electric Energy
- Magnetic Energy
- Thermal Energy
- Wind Energy
- Light Energy
- Cosmic Energy
Basic Principles of Vastu
Vastu shastra is an ancient Indian science of Vedic origin that deals with proper construction of a house. An age old technique, Vastu defines building of homes in sync with the natural forces.
The selection of a building site is a very important factor in Vastu Architecture. The Earth is considered a living organism in Vastu Science. Sthapati says, “The Vastu Shastras address this energy contained in the Earth as Vastu Purusha¹. Purusha means subtle energy that permeates the Earth and Vastu¹ is the material body that evolved out of the energy… In abstraction, Purusha is but a subtle substance: Vastu¹ (or essence of the subtle universe) which means universal consciousness¹ or awareness¹. Earth is…a live material object suspended in (a sea) of space and existing as apart … of the Universal Being. “

Origin of Vastu
The origin of vastu shastra may have taken place well over thousands of years ago. The learned men of those days may not have lived in houses themselves but they most definitely dedicated their lives to the development of the science “vastushastra” or “vastu”, as it is popularly known today.
The concept of consulting a Vastu expert, for creating peaceful settings at home and workplace, is quite popular today. However, unlike what most people tend to believe, this scientific study of directions, for architectural purposes, is not new. In fact, it has its origin in the Sthapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda, which dates back to thousands of years ago. The early principles of Vastu were framed on the basis of observation of the sunrays, at different times in the day. These observations were noted and important inferences drawn later on, on the basis of an in-depth screening.
Vastu study incorporates within itself the principles of sculptures, construction and architecture, as they have been described in the epics. The principles of the science laid down during those days were based purely on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. The observations and corrections made were noted and concluded only after in-depth screening of the situation.
Vastu is a part of Vedas, which are believed to be four to five thousand years old. Through penance and meditation yogis of that period acquired answers believed to have come from the cosmic mind itself to their questions. Hence Vedas are heeded with divine knowledge. The art of Vastu originates in the Stapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda. One can find its mention in different epics, like Mataysya Purana, Skanda Purana, Agni Purana, Garuda Purana, and Vishnu Purana. From ancient literature, it is found that that the construction of various temples and architectures like temples and palaces was based on Vastu only. There are many ancient shastras, like Vishvakarma Prakash, Samraangan Sutradhar, Kashyap Shilpshastra, Vrihad Sanhita, and Praman Manjaree, which pass over the Vastu knowledge to the next generation.
References to Vastu Shastra can also be found in the Mahabharata. The epic tells that when kings were invited to the city of Indraprastha, for the Rajasuya Yagna of King Yuddhistira, a number of houses were built, all of which followed Vastu guidelines. These houses were free from obstructions and had big compounds with great walls. The symmetry of various elements required for the construction of the palace was also taken into consideration. Even the mayasabha of the Mahabharata was built according to the ancient principles of Vastu Shastra.

Vastu Shastra is the scientific study of directions, which aims at creating equilibrium by balancing the different elements of nature and using them for the benefit of humans. One can take advantage of Vastu in many different ways. The primary Vastu Shastra rules are regarding the directions and elements of the nature. There are specific rules for each direction in Vastu Shastra. The eight primary directions actually stand for eight particular things in life and the right energy in all these eight corners can really be beneficial. There is a great importance of Vastu shastra in our life, as it paves way for happiness and prosperity to knock our doors. Vastu is very rational in the sense that it is based on scientific study and not on assumptions. Also there is surety about its permanency, as it takes into consideration the directions, which are static.
Talking about Vastu, the best part is that, its guidelines are very simple and easy to follow. Another important concept that forms the foundation of Vastu Shastra is the concept of the five elements. In Vastu Shastra, these are known as the Panchabhootas. The Panchabhootas are what the entire world is made out of. The five elements are air, water, fire, earth and space. All the benefits and advantages are bestowed upon a person or a house by the proper use and placement of these five elements. It can be applied to virtually all sets of constructions, be it a house, a particular room, temple, commercial complex, industry etc. Vastu extracts the positive energies of the five basic elements of nature – the solar energy of sun, lunar energy of moon, wind energy, magnetic effects of earth and heat energy of fire, balancing them to bring harmony in the life of a person. In fact, a harmonious life with the nature is the theme of Vastu shastra.
When there is an imbalance between the five chief elements of nature, it turns into some sort of agitation, sorrow, failure, poor economic condition and many other negative results for a human being. One of the basic mottoes of vastu is to extract the most out of natural forces so that we can get maximum energy for each and every field of life, vastu experts say. If we are standing against nature, some of the energies are obstructed and we find ourselves lagging behind in some spheres of life, they caution. In our ancient texts, there are innumerable references to methods that guide couples in having healthy babies. These techniques are called “Garbadhan ka Sidhant” (law of conceiving).
These observations are based on ayurveda, yogashastra, and vastushastra. Vast experts say they consider energy created by our various organs and by using ayurveda, they observe diseases inside human bodies for change in energy levels. Yogashastra makes our body fit and increases its energy to the desired levels. By combining the effects of all these forces, one can have a healthy baby, vastu experts say.
Vastu Shastra comprises of one of the most suitable ways to overcome such problems. It suggests ways in which you can live in agreement with the laws of nature, so that you remain healthy, be peaceful and work efficiently. So, it is advisable to consult a good vastu expert and follow his/her advice sincerely, when constructing a new structure.
