In the ancient Indian science of architecture, the Vastu Purusha Mandala is the metaphysical plan of a property. It is the symbolic representation of all the physiological and psychological changes that take place within a dweller as well within his or her property. The Vastu Purusha Mandala is a “cosmic man “who is believed to be present in every plot of land and is a very important aspect of Vastu Shastra. This “man” is said to lie with his face and stomach touching the ground, with his head in the north-east and legs in the south-west.
The Mandala is a location plan for a proposed building and it has been found that buildings constructed in accordance with the rules of the Vastu Purusha Mandala have been conducive to the health of owners.
Vastu Shastra says a human being is both a material body and subtle energy or spirit within it; with the Vastu Purusha Mandala, both the human body and a plot is compared. The Vastu Purusha Mandala, or sacred is seen as the living energy of a physical structure and is connected to it in the same manner our body and spirit are connected.
If the layout of dwelling fosters a flow of energy that supports the Mandala, then there will be harmony within the house. A house built following Vastu principles satisfies the Vastu Purusha Mandala by allowing the flow of cosmic energy to be in balanced. his will yield good things to the occupant.
The ideal shape of the Mandala-or plot of land –should be a square or rectangle because the “cosmic man’s” body fits within it. If the shape is irregular, it will result in cutting off some parts of the cosmic man, which will affect the well-being of the occupants of the plot.
If, for instance, Vastu Purusha has no “right arm”, the dweller will lose wealth and the women in his house will not have peace of mind.
If its “left arm” is missing, the dweller will experience more expenditure than income. If the “head” is absent, the breadwinner of the plot will lose assets and prosperity.
If the “feet” are missing, the man of the house will be financially week and women will encounter family problems.
When the Vastu Purusha Mandala, or “cosmic man” has all this limbs in perfect shape, the dwellers of the house will be prosperous and enjoy bliss and happiness.
Fundamental principles of Vastu Shastra –
Doctrine of orientation
- It gives importance and relevance to the eight cardinal directions. They are north, south, east , west, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west.
- The sun rises in the east and its rays are a rich source of vitamin D which is vital for the sustenance of life on earth.
- The early morning rays, which emit less heat, are the best. Doors and windows in the east would allow the sun’s ultraviolet rays to bestow light upon the occupants of the house.
- For this reason east and the northeast are given the most prominent place in Vasthu Sastra.
- This is followed by north, the direction of wealth, fame and prosperity.
- Rays from the west are infrared which are said to be detrimental to health.
- This is why fewer doors and windows are recommended in the west and south-west.
- After fixing the north and east points for the construction of a building, the rest of the building can be mapped out.
The house is compared to the human body. Both a dweller and the building are nothing but a mass of vibrating energy. The various parts of the human body perform different functions; when superimposed on the drawing of the house, this understanding gives full importance to the doctrine of orientation. In other words, the diagram shows where the entrance, hall kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc. should be located. Just as our legs should be strong enough to carry the weight of the whole body, so should the south-west corner of the building be built in such a way that it can bear the weight of the whole structure of the building . This area receives more heat and therefore Vasthu Sastra suggests that the walls in this area be made thicker. The eyes, mouth, ears, nose, together with the brain, should be in the northeast direction. Therefore this area should not be burdened with heavy structures.
Vastu Sastra measurement of one foot for construction of houses should not be done with the scale of 12 inches; rather a foot in Vastu Sastra means the length of the dweller’s foot.
Six main components of a building
These are the base (foundation), column, entablature, wings, roof and dome.
Aesthetics of the building
Having constructed the building according to Vastu Sastra, the beauty of the structure is then attended to . Here importance is given to the proper arrangement of part of the building to give a balanced appearance.
Before you embark on checking the Vastu Sastra of your house, it is imperative that you understand and distinguish between direction and quadrant. The direction that you or any object face or point towards is the north indicated by a compass needle.
The quadrant, on the other hand, is the section of the building or plot where you are. Divide the building or plot into nine squares; each square is a quadrant.
Relationship of the five elements with the five senses
In order to enjoy the maximum benefits of Vastu Sastra, a dweller must ensure that his or her five senses are in harmony with the five elements.
This is an important exercise, though many people do not understand the relevance of ether, air, fire, water and earth to human body.
To be in balance with ether, which is related to hearing, one should play soothing music when one wakes up in the morning. Devotional songs and instrumental tunes are recommended. Creaky doors and playing loud music are discourages, as they would disturb the peace . To enjoy the freshness of the air, which is related to touch, burring incense or uplifting scents to purify the air during sunrise and sunset is recommended.
Watching the sunrise and allowing the morning sun’s rays to enter a property enhances the environmental harmony between fire and sight. Gazing at a candle flame also has a therapeutic effect on the dweller.
Earth is related to smell and many people do not have direct connection with earth for instance, when did you last walk barefooted on the ground?
Allowing your feet to touch the soil, walk on a grassy patch or the beach, helps to discharge and recharge your body with positive earth energies. Breathing the freshness of sunrise is recommended to get the element connected with our sense organ.
Only when dweller is in harmony with these natural forces will be occupant enjoy health, wealth, happiness and peace of mind. Failure to do so can bring misery and misfortune.
According to the theory of the five elements, they are present in every atom of the universe and they need to be present in abundance with the home to make it vibrant and filled with positive energy. A details study of fundamental Indian science states that the elements have an interactive influence on all dwellers of a house or building.
Our body comprises the same five elements in the form of the five senses. According to Vastu Shastra, if a property is built according to the five elements, the internal energy currents in the bodies of those living there will be in tune with the universal energy, thus resulting in good health, wealth and happiness for those occupants.
